What will the 5 Days of Italy maps be like?

A chat with the Argentinian specialist to find out some more details about the territory and the type of maps that orienteers will have to face with the races in Cadore.

With 30 years of experience as an orienteer and cartographer, he has created more than a thousand maps, in woods and cities, in different parts of the world. In addition to those of the World School Championships and the 2022 World Masters Championships in Gargano, Francesco Buselli is preparing to create the maps for the 2023 European Sprint Championships in Veneto and Trentino and he was confirmed as the 5 Days of Italy cartographer. 

Francesco, how did your passion for orienteering come about? “Back in 1990 in middle school, thanks to my physical education teacher, I discovered this sport. It was love at first sight, to which a strong interest in cartography was added, especially related to the discipline. I remember spending countless hours looking at the maps and studying their making until I started making them on my own, from the schoolyard to the woods. At the same time, I dedicated myself to competitions, winning the Italian Junior Championships and entering the Italian National Team”.

What are the main characteristics of a good cartographer? “He must also be or have been an athlete because only in this way he can be able to understand how the athlete wants the competition ground to be represented. Furthermore, in my opinion, a deep love for nature is essential. I find it wonderful to be alone in the woods for 9/10 hours listening only to the nature sounds to create our sports system”.

How is a race map created? “The orienteering map is the most detailed that exists. To make it, you always start from a base, then go to the ground and detect all the objects present to be signaled with the appropriate symbols. Quite a difficult job, especially wood maps need a lot of effort and experience. Subsequently, the mappers will structure the necessary courses on that lift”.

How are the 5 Days of Italy works going? “The surveys for the creation of the Perarolo and the Caralte wood maps have just been completed. It will be fun! I’m only dealing with the cartography, but I think I’ll also collaborate later with the mappers to give them technical suggestions”.

What type of terrain will the orienteers face in Cadore? “The terrain is classic alpine, very steep in some areas, but really interesting because it is varied: in fact, fir, beech, and pine forests alternate with large areas of open pasture together with the picturesque village of Caralte, where there will be the arrival. I think that this variety will characterize the next 5 Days compared to past editions”.

Quattro chiacchiere con il tecnico argentino per scoprire qualche dettaglio in più in merito al territorio e alla tipologia di mappe che gli orientisti si troveranno ad affrontare con le gare in Cadore. 

Nei 30 anni di esperienza come orientista e cartografo ha dato vita a più di mille mappe, tra boschi e città, in differenti parti del mondo. Oltre a quelle dei Mondiali studenteschi e dei Mondiali Masters 2022 in Gargano, Francesco Buselli si appresta a realizzare le carte per i Campionati Europei Sprint assoluti 2023 in Veneto e Trentino e si conferma il cartografo della 5 Days of Italy. 

Francesco, come nasce la tua passione per l’orienteering? “Nel lontano 1990 alle scuole medie, grazie al professore di educazione fisica, ho scoperto questo sport. È stato un colpo di fulmine, a cui si è aggiunto un forte interesse per la cartografia, soprattutto legata alla disciplina. Ricordo che trascorrevo ore e ore a guardare le carte e a studiarne la realizzazione fino a quando ho iniziato a farle io, dal cortile della scuola al bosco. Contemporaneamente mi sono dedicato alle gare, arrivando a vincere i Campionati Italiani Junior ed entrando nella Nazionale Italiana”. 

Quali sono le caratteristiche imprescindibili di un buon cartografo? “Deve essere o essere stato anche un atleta, perché solo così può riuscire a comprendere come l’atleta voglia che sia rappresentato il terreno di gara. A mio avviso, inoltre, è imprescindibile un profondo amore per la natura. Trovo bellissimo stare nel bosco da solo per 9/10 ore ascoltando solo i suoni della natura per creare l’impianto del nostro sport”.

Ma come nasce una mappa per una gara? “La mappa dell’orienteering è la più dettagliata che possa esistere. Per realizzarla si parte sempre da una base, per poi andare sul terreno e rilevare tutti gli oggetti presenti da segnalare con l’apposita simbologia. Un lavoro abbastanza difficile, soprattutto le carte di bosco che hanno bisogno di molto impegno ed esperienza. In seguito il tracciatore strutturerà su quell’impianto i percorsi necessari”.

Come procedono i lavori per la 5 Days of Italy? “I rilievi per la realizzazione delle mappe di Perarolo e del bosco di Caralte sono appena terminati. Ci sarà da divertirsi! Mi sto occupando solo della cartografia, ma penso che collaborerò anche in seguito con i tracciatori per dare loro suggerimenti tecnici”.

Che tipologia di terreno affronteranno gli orientisti in Cadore? “Il terreno è classico alpino, in alcune zone molto ripido, ma davvero interessante perché vario: si alternano, infatti, boschi di abeti, faggi e pini, con ampie zone di pascolo aperto insieme al pittoresco paesino di Caralte, dove è previsto l’arrivo. Credo sia proprio questa varietà a caratterizzare la prossima 5 Days paragonandola alle passate edizioni”.
