400,000 tons of apples a year produced in Trentino in the Non and Sole Valleys, equal to about 20% of the national average production, thanks to the work of 4,000 family farms associated with 16 cooperatives that cultivate around 6,700 hectares of apple orchards globally. These are the numbers of Melinda, one of the most important Italian apple producers and one of the main European realities of the fruit and vegetable market, which will be the title sponsor of a stage of the 5 Days of Italy with the assignment of the relative prizes to the first classified in each category. ORGANIC AGRICULTURE AND CIRCULAR BIOECONOMY
Melinda has always been respectful of nature and the environment, in the awareness of working for the good of the entire community and to protect the territory. For more than 10 years, the company has been supporting an ambitious development plan for organic farming: the surface area cultivated with organic farming has exceeded 300 hectares and should reach 500 hectares in the next few years, with a production of 20,000 tons, according to the guidelines of the Production Regulations for organic farming. The Consortium has also launched research projects to create increasingly eco-friendly packaging through packages made from the waste of industrial processing of apples for a circular bioeconomy.

USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Consortium has long been based on a 100% renewable supply thanks to hydroelectric energy and self-produced photovoltaic energy. Its attention to sustainability has always been translated into strategic and operational choices, such as the Celle Ipogee, the first and only plant in the world for the refrigerated storage of fruit underground, created in the Rio Maggiore mine. 300 meters below the roots of the apple trees, Melinda has 34 cells, which allow 30,000 tons of fruit to be stowed in an eco-sustainable way, reducing CO2 emissions and electricity consumption compared to surface storage. In one year the total capacity of the underground cells will grow by over 30%. The new photovoltaic development plan on the roofs of the factories for the necessary increase in energy self-production will generate another 4.8 million kWh, doubling the current situation.
SAVING OF WATER RESOURCES
The use of drip irrigation on 97% of the apple orchards and the use of a recycling system in the selection plants also save considerable water resources. 30% less water is used in crops, while in the subsequent processing phase the drop can reach 90%.

AGRICOLTURA BIOLOGICA E BIOECONOMIA CIRCOLARE
Melinda è da sempre rispettosa della natura e dell’ambiente, nella consapevolezza di operare per il bene dell’intera collettività e a tutela del territorio. Da più di 10 anni l’azienda sostiene un ambizioso piano di sviluppo dell’agricoltura biologica: la superficie coltivata a bio ha superato i 300 ettari e nei prossimi anni dovrebbe raggiungere i 500 ettari, con una produzione di 20mila tonnellate, secondo le linee guida del Disciplinare di Produzione per l’agricoltura biologica. Il Consorzio ha anche avviato progetti di ricerca per realizzare imballaggi sempre più ecofriendly attraverso confezioni composte dagli scarti della lavorazione industriale delle mele, nell’ottica di una bioeconomia circolare.

UTILIZZO DI ENERGIE RINNOVABILI
Il Consorzio si basa da tempo su una fornitura 100% rinnovabile grazie all’energia idroelettrica e quella fotovoltaica autoprodotta. La sua attenzione per la sostenibilità è sempre stata tradotta in scelte strategiche e operative, come le Celle Ipogee, il primo e unico impianto al mondo per la frigoconservazione della frutta sottoterra, ricavato nella Miniera di Rio Maggiore. A 300 metri sotto le radici dei meli Melinda dispone di 34 celle, che consentono di stivare 30mila tonnellate di frutti in maniera ecosostenibile, abbattendo le emissioni di CO2 e riducendo i consumi di energia elettrica rispetto alla conservazione in superficie. In un anno la capienza totale delle celle ipogee crescerà di oltre il 30%. Il nuovo piano di sviluppo del fotovoltaico sui tetti degli stabilimenti per il necessario incremento dell’autoproduzione energetica genererà altri 4,8 milioni di kWh, raddoppiando l’attuale situazione.
RISPARMIO DELLE RISORSE IDRICHE
L’impiego dell’irrigazione a goccia sul 97% dei meleti e l’uso di un sistema di riciclo negli impianti di selezione permettono, inoltre, di risparmiare notevoli risorse idriche. Nelle colture si usa il 30% di acqua in meno, mentre nella successiva fase di lavorazione il calo può arrivare al 90%.
